5 Tips to Take a Home from Simple to Luxurious

No matter your budget when designing or decorating, it can sometimes feel like you’re starting from scratch when figuring out how to have a beautiful home. Luckily, with a bit of inspiration, you can master simple but elegant interior design. To achieve the luxurious home of your dreams, follow these tips and tricks of the trade.

1) Shop Affordable for Small Items

You don’t have to have a gold-plated ceiling to inspire feelings of beauty and luxury. In fact, many off-price retailers (think TJ Maxx, Home Goods, etc.) sell pieces with faux materials that are a perfect dupe for precious metals, stones, refined woods, and more. Try finding deals on items such as lamps, tabletop trinkets, and vases. These small items may seem insignificant, but they are truly the finishing touches on a house. Cut costs here because you’ll want to splurge a little bit more on other items, which we’ll cover next.

2) Invest in Quality Textiles

There are some things in your house that for both form and function, it will be worth it to spend a bit more on. Items such as bedding, linens, towels, pillows, and blankets all get used frequently, and as such, can get worn down more easily. Not to mention oftentimes these household items are front and center in an entertainment setting, so they’re worth the investment. Plus, a higher quality blanket will keep you happier in the winter than a cheap, throwaway one. Splurging a bit here will elevate your house to the next level and keep you and your guests comfortable all year long!

3) Consider Your Lighting

If you’ve tackled the above items and feel ready for more, there are some more large scale items you can update to make your home more luxurious. Our in-house designer for our model homes has referred to lighting as “the jewelry of the home.” This is because the right light fixtures can complete a look and make any space feel luxe.

When considering how to beautify your room, take into account the various sizes, shapes, and materials you’ll want for your lighting fixtures. For a start, materials such as gold or crystal can add instant elegance to a room, and larger fixtures can transform a room.

Include your windows during your lighting intake as well—both in terms of light let in, as well as how they look aesthetically. Think of your house like you’re dressing yourself for a nice event. You wouldn’t throw on an old t-shirt, so don’t do the same with your house! For drapery, investing in quality, extra wide, tall curtains that hang nicely can do wonders for a room.

4) Art and Plants

While you’re thinking bigger, consider larger art as well. Sometimes small prints or family photos can be dwarfed by the wall. Instead, go for much larger pieces to make a bold statement and save the smaller photos for your bedside.

Another addition to your home that will up the ante is incorporating plants—both real and fake. Plants add a more lush, soft feel to any space, and real plants in particular help to inject life into a room. Fresh flowers on a table can do wonders for a room—and your mood, too.

5) Create Ambience

Beyond finding that one special piece of art or furniture, there’s more to home beautification than furniture, and that’s the ambience in your home. Ambience is the mood and atmosphere of a space, and it’s something you can personalize in a variety of ways. As mentioned above, lighting plays a major role in how a house feels. Try playing around with fun and unique lighting concepts, such as sconces lining a hallway, or cozy evening lighting such as effervescent bulbs or candlelight.

When creating your own ambience in your home, you’ll also want to take the time to make sure your rooms are decluttered, and ideally “entertainment ready.” Consider the atmosphere of a home where the dining table is always set as if guests are coming over. This is an easy way to take your house up a notch, and have things looking polished and elegant with very minimal effort.

A Worthy Investment

We often underestimate just how much the environment we’re in has an effect on us. A home should be a haven where you can relax and enjoy your personalized space. After all, you’ve invested time and money into such a major purchase, so don’t let the design fall by the wayside when there are so many resources available to make it look amazing!
