7 Must-See Museums in Utah

Utah is known globally for its beautiful natural landscape, with national parks like Zion in the spotlight. Our nature truly is remarkable, but there are more things to do in Utah than hike! Utah is also a hub for learning, science, family, and fun. One big way you can experience this is through all the museums available to the public across the state. There are tons of family-friendly museums in Utah with cool things to see.

So, which ones should you add to your bucket list? That’s where we come in. Here’s our list of the seven Utah museums you can’t miss (in no particular order).

1. HILL AEROSPACE MUSEUM IN ROY

The Hill Aerospace Museum is the perfect day activity if you’re interested in airplanes and history! The museum has more than six dozen aircraft on display, and you can learn about the history of aviation development from the beginning, through wars, and into the modern age.

The museum offers virtual tours of some airplanes, and there’s even a virtual reality flying simulator!

Plus, there’s no entrance fee, which just strengthens its position on the list as a museum in Utah you have to check out.

2. CLARK PLANETARIUM IN SALT LAKE CITY

The Clark Planetarium is a space and science museum situated right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake. Its three floors of interesting interactive exhibits are designed to teach children and adults about the universe. There are also two theaters:

  • Hansen Dome Theatre
  • Northrop Grumman IMAX Theatre

Both theaters use state-of-the-art technology to explore nature and space. The Clark Planetarium has free admission for the exhibits and is a great museum to visit while you’re in the Beehive State.

3. BUTTERFLY BIOSPHERE IN LEHI

The Butterfly Biosphere is located just off the freeway at Thanksgiving Point. It’s an immersive look at the smaller animals on our planet. The Discovery Zone is full of exhibits teaching families about the importance of butterflies and other insects. The rest of the museum, or the Conservatory, is an indoor garden home to more than 1,000 butterflies for guests to interact with and enjoy. This museum is perfect to visit on a hot day because it’s indoor. Make sure to put it on the list!

This natural history museum in Utah is located on the BYU campus and is home to more than one million specimens. Visitors can view their many exhibits and learn about animals from all over the world, from Utah to Africa and beyond! If you want, you can attend one of their many events, or you can just show up anytime and enjoy. This museum is also free and is a must-add to your bucket list, especially if you have younger kids.

5. THE DINOSAUR MUSEUM IN BLANDING

The Dinosaur Museum is a great chance to step into the deep past and learn about some of the world’s most famous extinct reptiles.

Utah has always been a hub for paleontology, and you can learn all about the work being done throughout the state in some of the exhibits and maybe even dig up some dinosaur bones yourself! Basically, this museum is an affordable way to spend an awesome afternoon!

6. MUSEUM OF NATURAL CURIOUSITY IN LEHI

This is the second museum at Thanksgiving Point on the list, but we couldn’t resist! The Museum of Natural Curiosity is situated near some of the largest communities of family homes in Utah, and it’s one of the best children’s museums available! They combine large interactive exhibits with children’s curiosity to create the perfect environment for kids to get excited about science and life! With five main areas and hundreds of games and exhibits in each area, this museum in Utah is a child’s dream! It is a little bit pricier, but it’s totally worth it and has earned its place on this list.

7. UTAH MUSERUM OF FINE ARTS IN SALT LAKE

The Utah Museum of Fine Arts is the largest art museum in Utah. It’s affiliated with the University of Utah, and it displays art from around the world and across history. It has many special exhibitions throughout the year and occasional family events you can check out.

This museum normally costs money, but they offer discounts or free tickets to a big group of people, so make sure to see if you qualify for any of those opportunities.
