MOUNTAIN RANGES IN UTAH

Let’s explore the mountain ranges in Utah and their significance to the communities lucky enough to be nestled at their feet.

WASATCH RANGE

The Wasatch Range is the most prominent mountain range in Utah and forms the western edge of the larger Rocky Mountains. The range is known for its exceptional beauty and is a hub for outdoor activities such as mountain biking and hiking. It also has several famous ski resorts including Alta, Snowbird, and Park City.

UINTAH MOUNTAINS

The Uinta Mountains are the highest mountain range in Utah. They cover a vast area in northeastern Utah and are home to hundreds of lakes and streams. Kings Peak, standing at 13,528 feet, is the highest point in Utah and a popular destination for hikers. The area has opportunities for backpacking, fishing, and high-altitude camping.

LA SAL MOUNTAINS

Red rocks one of the mountain ranges in Utah

The La Sal Mountains rise dramatically above the desert landscape near Moab and provide a cool retreat from the heat with peaks that soar to over 12,000 feet. The range is composed of volcanic rocks and offers a stark contrast to the sandstone formations in the surrounding national parks. They are popular for both summer and winter recreation.

OQUIRRH MOUNTAINS

The Oquirrh Mountains are located to the southwest of Salt Lake City and are primarily known for the Bingham Canyon Mine, one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. The most prominent peak is Flat Top Mountain. These mountains provide hiking trails and mining tours as a unique local attraction. The Oquirrh Mountains are also an important habitat for wildlife, including large mammals such as deer, elk, and mountain lions.

STANSBURY MOUNTAINS

The Stansbury Range, west of the Oquirrh Mountains and Great Salt Lake includes Deseret Peak, which, at 11,031 feet, is the highest peak in the range and a favorite among hikers. The Stansbury Mountains offer a wide range of recreational activities, including camping, hiking, horseback riding, and during the winter, snowshoeing and skiing.

TUSHAR MOUNTAINS

The Tushar Mountains, situated in south-central Utah, are among the state’s highest. Delano Peak, the highest point in the range, stands at an impressive 12,169 feet. The mountains are part of the Fishlake National Forest and offer scenic beauty, hiking trails, and opportunities for wildlife viewing, especially for those interested in seeing herds of mountain goats.

HENRY MOUNTAINS

These mountains were one of the last places in the United States to be mapped and surveyed, which occurred in the late 19th century by the Powell Geographic Expedition. They are known for their isolation, unspoiled natural beauty, and as the home to one of the only free-roaming bison herds in the country. The Henry Mountains offer a true off-the-beaten-path adventure for those willing to explore them.

ABAJO MOUNTAINS

A mountain range in Utah

Also known as the Blue Mountains, the Abajo Mountains near Monticello provide excellent opportunities for outdoor recreation. With peaks reaching over 11,000 feet, the range offers cool relief from the desert heat and is home to several campgrounds, hiking trails, and ATV routes. From the peaks, visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the Four Corners area.

BEAR RIVER MOUNTAINS

The Bear River Mountains, part of the Wasatch Range, offer a diverse range of outdoor activities. Logan Canyon passes through the Bear River Mountains and provides access to camping, rock climbing, fishing, and winter sports. The range is also home to Beaver Mountain Ski Area, one of Utah’s oldest ski resorts.

FISH LAKE MOUNTAINS

Situated near the geographic center of Utah, the Fishlake Mountains are a small range within the Fishlake National Forest, which is known for Pahvant Peak and the large alpine lake, Fish Lake. The area is famous for its aspen forests, which create a vivid display of fall colors, and for excellent fishing, boating, and wildlife viewing.
