Building a Home with EDGEhomes

EDGEhomes is one of Utah’s largest home builders. You may know someone with an EDGEhome, have been to one of our community events, or perhaps seen our signs all across the Wasatch Front. If you’ve always had an interest or just recently wondered “how do you build a house?”, we’ll dive into specifics here!

The Buying Process

When you buy with EDGEhomes, you’ll have plenty of options. Starting with what type of experience or timing will best fit your purchase, you can either build a home or buy an existing spec home. Spec homes (listed on our website under Quick Move-Ins) are a great option when you need to get into a house quickly and may not be as attached to hand-selecting all of the options. These homes range from being currently under construction to recently completed, so they’re perfect if you need to move soon but still want a beautiful EDGEhomes product!

Should you choose to build, you’ll have a longer timeline, but more involvement in what the house will look like. Starting with our floorplans, EDGEhomes offers a plethora of floorplans to suit a variety of lifestyles and budgets. Click here to see all of our floorplans, including exterior renderings, 3D virtual tours, interactive floorplans, and galleries with photos of the floorplan!

Design Studio

The next part of the home building process with EDGEhomes is the one that is often the most fun for buyers—the design studio! Buyers who build a townhome or single family home with EDGEhomes will have the opportunity to sit down for a one-on-one design appointment with one of our professional designers to select structural and design options for their home.

You will be able to see and touch the incredible variety of samples for everything from faucets and stone to carpet and tiles. The first design appointment will be more in-depth, spanning a few hours, and later you will have a finalization appointment to review all of your selections with your same designer and make any revisions, if desired.

Architecture, Engineering, and Permitting

Once you’ve approved your floor plans and the personal selections for your home, the plans are sent to the architect to begin drawing up the preliminary plans. Those plans are then sent on to the engineer to have final drawings completed. The architectural part of the process can take 3-4 weeks on average to complete. Once final drawings are completed your plans are then submitted to the city for permits.

Permitting times do vary depending on the city in which you are building your new home, but in most cases, you can plan for this part of the process to take 6-8 weeks. This is the perfect time to begin putting together a wish list for your home, browsing Pinterest for inspiration, and checking out our blog for home and design tips. While this is where the technical, behind-the-scenes stuff is happening, it is also the time to start getting excited about making this home your own!

Final Steps

Orientation

After the building process is done and you’re in the final stretch of your home building process, you will have an orientation where you will walk around the completed home with your orientation manager. The orientation manager will go over everything you need to know about the house, show you where utility and other important items are located, go over any specific maintenance tips for keeping your home in great shape, and make sure everything is up to your standards. For more specifics on the orientation check out our blog about it.

Closing

The final step after building a home will be your closing! At your closing, you will sign final documents, review the breakdown of your loan, receive a packet with more information about your home and community, and receive the keys to your new house.
