The 5 Best Summer Activities in Utah

Utah has amazing things to offer year-round, but it can truly shine in the summer months. With such an abundance and variety of summer activities in Utah, there is something for every age range and ability so that the whole family can join in on the summer fun.

Whether you’re new to Utah or moving to The Beehive State in the future, here are some of our favorite activities to enjoy when the warm, long days of summer roll around.

1. Hike Just About Anywhere

Not only is hiking through Utah beautiful, but it can be a quick and easy outing depending on your route (perfect for young families!). Utah is known for its expansive outdoors and easily accessible mountains.

You could enjoy a quick stroll through Bridal Veil Falls or push the limits and take a nighttime hike to the top of Mt. Timpanogos to view the sunrise from the mountain’s summit. With thousands of hiking trails throughout the state, there are trails fit for a toddler and for an avid backpacker.

You can filter through Utah’s hiking routes based on difficulty, location, length, and other features through AllTrails. With mountains practically in your backyard, hiking is one of the most popular, free summer activities in Utah.

2. Explore Utah’s National Parks

Not only can you hike to your closest trailhead, but you can take special trips to hike through some of the most iconic national parks located right in Utah. Arches, Zion, Bryce Canyon, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks all boast the vibrant red rocks Utah is known for worldwide. The natural formations of gravity-defying arches and mesmerizing slot canyons are fun for both the amateur and seasoned adventurer.

Some parts of Utah’s national parks may require reservations because of their popularity, such as Angels Landing. Check your trip’s itinerary and make any reservations you need beforehand.

3. Float the Provo River

A desert summer is a hot summer, and fresh water can be just the thing you need to cool down in the middle of July. Floating the Provo River has been a local favorite to relax while finding relief from the heat. It’s one of the most classic summer activities in Utah County. Not only will you cool off from the mountain waters, but you’ll be able to take in breathtaking scenery along the way.

Schedule your tubing adventure with one of the local rafting outfitters to ensure you have the proper safety gear and know when to enter and exit the river safely.

4. Experience Utah City Festivals

Local Utahns come out each summer to celebrate their hometowns with days-long celebrations. Many towns showcase their unique specialties and celebrate with parades, fairs, rodeos, live music, artistic and food vendors, and more. Towns throughout the state participate, with a festival happening nearly every week of the summer, giving you the time to celebrate all season long.

Find your town’s celebration on their official website, and check out neighboring towns to party all summer and get to know your community.

Here in the northernmost part of Utah, you can jet ski, boat, fish, or just enjoy a day on the sandy beaches. Nearby, you can enjoy cave exploring, ATV trails, horseback riding, and golf courses.

Lodging includes campgrounds and RV parks, motels, bed and breakfasts, and vacation rentals. Don’t forget to try a famous raspberry shake while you’re there!
